When Allegra was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, I knew I had to do everything possible to protect her kidneys. I already knew that my vet recommends AminAvast® for her patients with chronic kidney disease. Even though Allegra’s kidney function has been normal on all bloodwork since she was first diagnosed in January of 2021, I wanted to know whether we should start her on AminAvast.

The connection between hyperthyroidism and kidney disease

Hyperthyroidism can mask kidney disease because the excess thyroid hormone in the system increases renal blood flow and glomerular filtration rate. Glomeruli are tiny filters in the kidney that remove waste and excess fluid from the blood. Once the thyroid is regulated, and glomerular filtration decreases, BUN and creatinine values may increase. Several studies have shown a marked decline of renal function after treatment of hyperthyroidism. Approximately 30% of patients develop kidney disease after treatment of hyperthyroidism. This has been documented with all currently available treatments for hyperthyroidism (medication, I-131, or surgery.)

My vet agreed that the time to put Allegra on AminAvast was now. “My anecdotal experience, reinforced by what I hear from colleagues, is that many cats with stage 2 and 3 chronic kidney disease seem to just do a bit better when on AminAvast,” says Dr. Tasi. “They have a better appetite, better coat quality, and better energy. I tell clients I don’t really know exactly what it is doing but I feel it is supportive of the kidneys.”

However, Dr. Tasi thinks that it’s unlikely that AminAvast will reverse any changes already present. “In late stage 3 or stage 4 CKD I honestly don’t see it do very much,” she says, “but especially in stage 4. These cats are running on very little functional kidney tissue to even support.” Dr. Tasi has never seen an adverse reaction to AminAvast. “The worst case scenario is a cat won’t eat their food when the AminAvast is mixed in, and I do not want to turn any old cat off its food,” she says.

About AminAvast®

AminAvast® contains a blend of amino acids and a peptide that can help support healthy renal function in cats.

  • Helps maintain the health of aging kidneys.
  • Complements all diets.
  • Maintains normal renal health.
  • Supports normal renal cell structure.
  • Maintains natural low levels of oxidative stress.
  • Supports a healthy coat.
  • Supports overall health and vitality.

The active ingredient in AminAvast® was shown to significantly support kidney health in several clinical studies.

AminAvast is super easy to administer: I mix the flavorless powder in with Allegra’s meals twice a day. The recommended dose is 1 capsule twice a day for cats up to 10 pounds, 2 capsules twice a day for cats between 11 and 20 pounds. Dr. Tasi has a money saving tip for parents of larger cats: “For cats bigger than 12 pounds I think the dog size capsules AminAvast are way more economical.” She gives her own cat 1/2 of a dog capsule twice daily, versus 2 capsules of the cat version twice daily.

As with all supplements, please talk to your vet about whether AminAvast® is right for your cat.

AminAvast® is available from many veterinarians, and from Chewy.com and Amazon.

  2. In looking into info about this product, there seems to be concern about giving this to pets on a high protein diet. I was also surprised and concerned to find that this was originally named RenVast. According to a question on Amazon to the manufacturer, it is the same unchanged product but just renamed.
Renvast was recalled by the FDA in 2015.
