Summer afternoon: to me those have always been the two most
beautiful words in the English language. ~Henry James

Summer is my favorite season. I love everything about it, and even the recent heat wave doesn’t make me love summer any less. Hazy hot and humid days are just part of what summer is like in this part of the world, and you’ll rarely if ever find me complaining about being too hot.

Allegra and Ruby are indoor cats, but I think they, too, prefer summer over every other season. The sun puddles are more plentiful and last longer this time of year, and they get to enjoy summer breezes coming in through open windows. And on the really hot days, they get to celebrate the fact that they’re air-conditioned kitties!

When I was a child, my family would take annual summer vacations, either in the mountains or at the beach. In typical European style, we’d go somewhere and stay for two or three weeks. The memories of some of these childhood vacations will last a lifetime. It’s been years since I’ve taken a real summer vacation, but every summer, I make sure to take time to enjoy the season.

Maybe some of my favorite summer activities will give you some ideas on how to enjoy summer, even if you can’t take a vacation:

My daily walk. On really hot days, I walk very early in the morning. My neighborhood is just starting to wake up, the birds are singing, there aren’t a lot of people out and about yet, and the air just smells and feels like summer. Bliss!

Eating outside. As much as I possibly can. Whether it’s on my deck, or at one of the many wonderful restaurants with outdoor seating areas near my home, there’s just nothing better to me than eating a meal outside. And it’s even better when it’s a meal shared with good friends.

Taking day trips. Since I’m not taking a vacation this summer, I’m making time for a few day trips. Whether it’s into the city, to the mountains or to the beach, I’m fortunate that I live close enough to a lot of beautiful places.

Summer reading. Of course I read all year long, but there’s something about summer reading that is special. This is the time of year when I indulge in “beach reads”, and it’s even more fun when I can sit outside on my deck, or in some of my favorite outdoor cafes around the area.

I hope you and your kitties are making time to enjoy your summer. What are some of your favorite things about the season?

  1. Two or three week vacations Ingrid?..Wow..They know how to live over there don’t they?..lol..I love eating outside also..but not when it is over a hundred degrees! My cats get to stay in the AC too..

  2. We have finally gotten some relief to the intense summer heat and humidity. It’s been glorious this weekend. Katie & Waffles don’t even know what humidity is…but they sure do love the sun puddles. …Separate sun puddles, that is!

(though they are continuing to make progress!)

    😉

  3. My human loves to take her breakfast outside when it’s not yet too hot! And to read in the park, too =^.^=

  4. Summer and I have always had a love-hate relationship but I certainly like it more now that we had AC installed in the house! Our house has become a real retreat from the above average heat we’ve had. But I’ve always loved summer reads. One of my favorites that I re-read every summber is The Inn at Lake Devine by Elinor Lipman.
