I’ve been spending quite a bit of time lately thinking about how important it is to maintain a positive mindset – and how challenging it can be in a world that constantly bombards us with messages that are anything but positive.

Everything you think and speak affects your mindset

Maintaining a positive mindset requires commitment and discipline. If you wake up first thing in the morning and think about how hard your day is going to be and how many problems you’ll be facing, then chances are, that’s exactly the kind of day you’ll get. The fact is that every single day will present you with challenges – that’s just life. You can’t control that. What you can control is how you approach these challenges.

One of the main tenets of the Law of Attraction is that “thoughts become things.” And while the Law of Attraction has been abused by many a New Age guru, I believe that this basic precept is true – but there is a catch. You already are what you’ve been thinking about all your life. You will need to get rid of those old ways of thinking, and it’s going to take discipline to do that.

And make no mistake, it’s not just what you think about that affects you. Conversations you have with others can also do a real number on your mindset. How many times do you find yourself talking to someone who’s always complaining about not having any money, about hating their job, and about how tough it is to get ahead in life? If you participate in those conversations, you’re going to drag your own mindset down to the level of the person you’re talking to.

How to change your mindset to a more positive set point

If you have trouble maintaining a positive mindset, observe yourself for one day. Notice whether you think about or speak from a place of negativity and lack, and stop yourself as soon as you notice it. You’ll probably be surprised at just how often it happens. Then get to work on replacing those negative thoughts with more positive ones.

One example that I like to use when I explain this to people is money. No, you can’t just think yourself rich. But if you constantly complain about your finances, you will get stuck in an endless negative pattern. Start focusing on the positive aspects of the money you do have. Gratitude is a wonderful tool to help you transform your thinking. Rather than constantly talking about how expensive everything is, about how you can’t pay the bills this month, and about how the economy will never get better, putting the focus on gratitude rather than lack will change your mindset. When you pay your electric bill, focus on being grateful that your home is being kept warm all winter long. When you pay your credit card bill, be thankful for all the things you’ve been able to purchase during the billing period.

Of course, you’ll have to also follow your new positive thoughts with appropriate actions. In the money example, take a good look at your financial situation and come up with a plan to improve it. If you combine getting at the root of your negative attitude about money, or any other subject, with action, no matter how small, your life will change for the better.

I bet you anything cats don’t have a problem with maintaining a positive mindset. I can’t imagine a cat ever thinks “I’ll never catch that mouse.” Instead, I’m pretty sure that she’s visualizing herself catching the mouse (a positive mindset,) waiting for just the right moment to pounce (making a plan for positive action) and finally, taking down her prey.

Do you find it challenging to maintain a positive mindset?

  1. Very nice article, Ingrid. Thank you ~

I have tried to share a video with you on Conscious Cat and youtube has it set where it cannot
be shared to a page such as yours. The video is two kitties sitting at the window and they are
having quite a conversation! It is just beautiful. AND, looking closely, they are torties!

A friend of mine has a tortie and she speaks the light language. I was so totally surprised as she went on for about 30 seconds one time! Still makes me shake my head. I don’t get to see her anymore, so she comes to me in my dreams. She is one very special Being……..

Please go to my page and see that most beautiful video… if you wish.
