daylight-saving-time

In much of the United States, today marks the arrival of Daylight Saving Time. I’m not a huge fan of the time change. I’m an early bird, and I prefer it to be light when I get up in the morning. Mostly, I just wish they’d stop switching back and forth, which makes absolutely no sense to me. And I can guarantee you it doesn’t make sense to cats. They may like the “spring forward” change – breakfast an hour early! – but I’m pretty sure they’re not crazy about delayed meal times when we fall back in November.

But there is one really great thing about Daylight Saving Time: it means spring must be right around the corner.

For me, it’s also a rather powerful reminder just how fast time passes. How often do we use the phrase “there just aren’t enough hours in the day?” Well, today, there really aren’t. And perhaps, that can serve as a reminder to us just how precious time really is.

Even though there are only 23 hours in the day today, take one of those hours and spend it thinking about how you spend your time.

Are you spending your time on the things that really matter to you, or is your life filled with schedules and to do lists? If you don’t make time for the things that really matter to you, you will never be happy.

Once you are clear on what matters to you, give those things priority on your to do list. And, almost more importantly, accept that some things on your to do list might not get done. But if they’re not that important to you, does it really matter?

Cats don’t have the same distorted sense of time that we humans do. You’ll never find a cat worrying about not spending enough time napping in the sun puddle. And other than maybe being pleasantly surprised that breakfast and dinner are being served an hour earlier today, they’re not going to give any thought to Daylight Saving Time.

  1. Ingrid says: “I’m not a huge fan of the time change.” – all in favor say AYE!!!
For many years, especially since they have been moving the start dates back, I have been saying just change it all for 1/2 hour and leave it alone!

Kitties here do not get confused as I get up when I get up, not when a clock says so! “Breakfast” can vary by a hour or more, sometimes earlier, sometimes later. There is usually still some left from late night before bed, so if they are really that hungry, they have something to eat.

For those of you who stick to a strict time, start a week or two BEFORE the time change, adjusting by say 5-10 minutes. By the time the clock change happens, their mealtime has been adjusted!

  2. I always wake up before the sun comes up. But what bothers me the most is when my cats get confused about breakfast time. I hate making them wait an hour longer, but they have to get their little internal timers set right.
