I couldn’t find any attribution for the above quote, but it sure resonates with me. I’ve been exercising pretty much all my life. I walk about three miles every day and only miss my walk on days when the weather is truly awful. I don’t like gyms, but I work out at home with weights three or four times a week.

One thing I’ve never been able to stick with are workout videos, until a friend introduced me to Schellea Fowler, an energetic 50-something-year-old who offers a series of short workouts on her fabulous50s Youtube channel. Working out has never been this much fun for me. I love that the videos are short – some as short as 5 minutes, others 10, 15 or 30 minutes – so they can be easily squeezed in throughout even the busiest day.

Shellea has a lovely energy (and adorable accent) that is positive and uplifting without being obnoxious. I find her gentle encouragement motivating and inspirational. I find myself smiling through all her workouts, but that’s not to say that they’re not challenging.

I started doing one of these mini workoutts whenever I feel the urge to check the news – a much better use of my time, and a real boon to my mental and physical health.

Bonus: Allegra was really intrigued when I first started doing these workouts. She usually monitors my workouts from her vantage point on my bed, but she has taken to being an active participant in Shellea’s videos. I guess it adds an extra element of mindfulness for me to make sure I don’t step on Allegra as she winds her way through my legs while I’m working out!

  1. I really need to start working out again. I need to find the motivation. I like the sound of the video you are talking about. I would rather learn from someone my age that I could ralate to more.
