It’s now about two years ago that Ruby was first diagnosed with advanced kidney disease. Sometimes it still seems like it was just yesterday, and at times it’s still incomprehensible that my little girl is no longer with us. I’m grateful I have eight years of her column to look back on to trigger specific memories, because much as we don’t want to believe it, time does blur what we remember.

Ruby was always fascinated by leaves blowing around outside the window, especially on the deck, where she could see them close up. She wasn’t sure what to make of these “creatures” moving around outside.

  1. While trying to get caught up with my mail, I can’t forget Ruby, the darling cat who belonged to all of us readers of CC, and Ruby just loved to play with the leaves, as if they were her special toys. Ruby made everything special being that she had tons of love in her cat being.
Where ever you’re at tonite, my dear Ruby, I hope you’re shuffling some fall leaves around and knowing that all of us still love you as much as we did the very first day we laid eyes upon your sweet face. Sleep tight, Ruby!

  2. It was about two years ago that my Patches was diagnosed with cancer. I lost her in early November. She was only 8 years old and I miss her everyday. We were supposed to grow old together. It is true, time blurs some of your memories. I wish I recorded more, took more pictures. But every fall triggers memories of when she first came into my life, but also her last days too. What a gift to have the blog to look back on.

  3. I lost my cat, Petie, to advanced kidney disease, too. He was my childhood cat and he passed when I was in my early twenties. I only have a few precious photos of him, but so many memories. What a special video of Ruby playing with her outdoor leaves. I always enjoy watching our cats and wonder what they are thinking.

  4. Dear Ingrid,
It’s been a little over three months now since I lost my darling tortoiseshell Bella. As mentioned before, I find solace looking at your darling cats. This video is so very reminiscent of what Bella would do, when things like leaves interested her outside the window. At the family’s request we have a part Maine coon kitten. My grief though, is just as intense. I would dearly love another tortoiseshell, but realise the time is not right. I think tortoiseshell cats are incredible; Bella taught me that.
