My mom passed away 28 years ago, yet Mother’s Day still is a bit of a bittersweet day. The pain of missing her has faded after all these years, but I still feel some sadness when Mother’s Day cards start showing up in stores, friends make plans to spend time with their moms, and restaurants offer Mother’s Day specials.

Of course she’s in my heart every day, but I can’t help but wonder what it would be like to still have her in my life in a more tangible way. In the last birthday card she sent me before she passed away, she told me how proud she was of what I had made of my life at the time. But she never knew me as veterinary hospital manager, or as a writer. She never knew how much joy my chosen careers have brought into my life.

I’m not sure when this was taken, but I’m guessing I was one or two years old.

And yet, I know she knows. I know she’s been cheering me on all these years, and I know she’s been comforting me during the difficult times. But on days like today, I wish I could get just one more hug from her. I wish I could hear her voice just one more time, calling me by any of the special names she had for me. I wish she was still here.

A belated Happy Mother’s Day to you and all the kitty-mothers out there!

  3. I lost my mom 5 years ago to 3rd degree heart block. She refused to have a pacemaker put in and asked for us to let her go. She passed just 5 min before I got to her room in the hospital. I was crushed beyond belief. She was a very religious woman and had many friends. At her burial mass there were 2 priest and a deacon that said her mass on All Saints Day. She really was a saint. I miss her so much.

  4. Mother’s Day can be very bittersweet. I lost my Mom 46 years ago and struggled for many years with my grief. She was so young when she was claimed by cancer. I pray for her and hope that she is at peace and finally with my Dad. Bless all mothers out there. The best job in the world.

  5. Ingrid, I know exactly how you feel, and you expressed perfectly for those of us whose mothers are no longer with us.

I miss my mom every single day and truly wish she was still here.

  6. Happy Mother’s Day! This morning we are going to visit my mom with a special new family member. Early yesterday morning my husband heard a tiny cry outside the house. Turned out a little kitten was in the back yard. I found out she came from a cat our new neighbors have and she was looking for homes for the kittens. So, this special girl is going to live with my mom. She saw her picture on Facebook and fell in love with her. She has deformed front toes. One foot only has 3 jellybeans and two claws and the other foot, she two jellybeans that are attached. Both feet at flat in the front too, not rounded like most cats. But this doesn’t effect how she walks or plays. All three of my girls have not been happy with her in the house.

  7. My mom passed away July 12th 2002 from ovarian cancer.. We missed her so much. Wishing all the Mother’s a wonderful day.

  8. Hi Ingrid, your words echo my thoughts and feelings. I lost my mom in 1998 to lung cancer. I was 24 and she had just turned 50. I miss her and wish she had been here to share in my joy in getting married and having kids. I wish she had been here to comfort me when my husband, dad and brother died. Most of all I wish we could share the good times and laughter which were tantamount in our lives.
Mother’s Day will never be the same for me. My kids are grown and flown. I will just keep busy running around town, running errands and perhaps getting a coffee.
I hope you have a peaceful day.
    Jean

  9. Ingrid, you little cutie, and your adorable Allegra looks beautiful surrounded by flowers for her ‘Mother’s Day’ photo. Wow, I wish my mother was here with me, too, but she’s in my heart, forever and forever. Happy ‘Mother’s Day’ all you great ladies on this planet, and whether you mother a pet or a child, you’ve earned the badge of Mother.

  10. Ingrid, your dear mother’s devotion shows in her face, as you sit on her knee in that photo. Thank you for sharing it.
