Our hearts are with everyone in Los Angeles who has lost their home or place of work. The scale of the devastation shown in news reports is almost impossible to comprehend, and that’s watching it from afar. I simply can’t imagine what everyone in LA is going through.
As always, my thoughts turn to the animals, both pets and wildlife. In the days and weeks to come, we’ll hear devastating stories of unbearable pain about people who couldn’t get to their pets in time. But we’ll also hear stories of heroic rescues and hopefully also some stories of happy reunions, as rescue organizations and their staff and volunteers step in to save as many animals as they can.
And they can all use your help. There are many organizations that are doing absolutely heroic work in the affected areas. I will update this post with additional organizations as information becomes available.
Pasadena Humane
Pasadena Humane has taken in hundreds of animals due to evacuations, and they’re also having many animals come in with burns and injuries. Staff and volunteers are working nonstop caring for these animals, including injured wildlife. They are being treated in their ICU with pain medications, wound care, fluid, and oxygen as needed.

Best Friends Animal Society
Best Friends Animal Society’s emergency response team is on the ground in Los Angeles, offering help and support to other local animal welfare organizations while also working to ensure the safety of their own pets and staff in their Pet Adoption Center. Yesterday, they moved the 33 cats and dogs that they took in from Pasadena Humane to their Kanab, Utah sanctuary to find refuge from the fires and to free up space for incoming animals.

The Little Lion Foundation
The Little Lion Foundation in Long Beach, CA has empty kennels ready to take in cats and small animals affected by the fires. They can provide temporary housing for displaced cats, medical care and support for injured or traumatized cats, and food, litter and other essential supplies.

Thank you to all who rescue the pets. So heartbreaking to see all the devastation.
Thank you Ingrid for this information. As a resident of Utah, I wanted to update you and your readers on Best Friend’s activities. Yesterday, a large number of cats were moved to the Salt Lake City Best Friends facility from the Kanab facility so that more cats can be moved from LA to Kanab. They are also beginning to do this with dogs today.
Thanks, Will. I saw that on their Facebook page. They’re such a wonderful organization.
I just can’t imagine the heartbreak of losing everything. The pets, livestock and wildlife, not knowing, many missing. I live in NC and the western part of the state is still dealing with Helene. It is going to take years to recover.
THANK YOU for this! One of the things on my to-do list today was to find charities to donate to to support animals affected by this situation. I will be donating to each, and sharing the links with fellow animal lovers. Sending love!
It’s heartbreaking to see what everyone is going through there. The animals don’t understand and that hurts even more. I’m thankful for the organizations that are helping them.
