Senior cats need playtime just as much as younger cats, you may just have to get a little more creative about engaging them in play. Allegra is almost 16 years old, and even though she’s starting to show her age, there are still times when she acts like a kitten.
The other day, I came across this orange spring toy in the back of the kitchen junk drawer (doesn’t everyone keep cat toys in their junk drawer?) I tossed it to Allegra – and it unleashed her inner kitten in a big way! It made me so happy!
This just goes to show that rotating toys can make an old toy feel brand new. I don’t even remember when I got this spring, but I sure am glad I found it again.
I can’t find the exact toy online anymore, but various spring toys are available on Amazon.

I am sorry that I have been absent lately. I am not on social media or even read many emails. too much stuff to deal with. I am glad to see Allegra is up and about and playing. She looks great. I hope her health will continue. When I had my dogs, (2 died at the end of last year, my vet made mistakes), I would rotate some of their toys. However, I am getting a new puppy soon, a show dog, and I can’t believe all of the toys, new ones that I have. I guess I stocked up because one of my girls was very destructive with her toys. May Allegra have a wonderful birthday in August and many more years. Early Happy Birthday Allegra.
Nice to hear from you again, Sandy, and thank you for the early birthday wishes!
Some great saves as she keeps The Spring from escaping under the fridge !
I know! I really appreciated that!
How adorable! Watching a cat play is good for the soul, lifts the spirit, and just renews our faith in the good things in life.
We think our SapphoLily is around 10? Because she was outside before adopting us, we don’t know. She came slowly to appreciate toys. Watching her play now is a true delight. I got a beautiful custom cat cave from Nepal via Etsy, thinking she would love it because it is wool and she loves wool rugs and sleeps on my older cashmere sweaters. She has no desire to curl up in it, LOL, so I started putting all her wool mice, wool balls, etc, in there to avoid trip hazards. To our surprise, she loves to get them out of the cave!!! Watching her initiate this play is really a delight.
How adorable that SapphoLily repurposed the cave as toy storage, and so thoughtful to remove tripping hazards for you!
I love it when they play like a kitten. Miss Kiki is 13 and I have noticed her playing less and less over the years. but when she does get it in her to play, she goes all out.
That’s wonderful that Miss Kiki still plays like a kitten.
My middle aged cats and young fosters all love springs. Such hunters!
I regularly rotate toys
I’d honestly forgotten how much Allegra likes springs until this one resurfaced.
