Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to your cat’s health. They benefit everything from your cat’s skin and coat to their joints, heart, and kidneys, and they’re especially important for senior cats and cats with chronic health issues.
What are omega-3 fatty acids?
Omega-3s are essential fatty acids. Cats can’t produce them on their own, so they must get them either from their diet, or through supplementations.
The two most important types for feline health are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid.)
These omega-3s are found primarily in cold-water fish like salmon, sardines, and anchovies. While plant-based omega-3s (such as flaxseed oil) contain ALA (alphpa linolenic acid,) cats can’t efficiently convert ALA into EPA and DHA, which is why marine-based sources are far more beneficial.
Benefits of omega-3’s for cats
- Healthy skin and shiny coat: If your cat struggles with dry, flaky skin or excessive shedding, omega-3s can make a noticeable difference. They reduce inflammation, ease itching, and help restore moisture to the skin. Many cat parents notice a softer, glossier coat within a few weeks of regular supplementation.
- Improved joint health and mobility: EPA in omega-3s acts as a natural anti-inflammatory, helping relieve stiffness and pain in arthritic or aging cats. Senior cats given fish oil often move more comfortably and show renewed interest in play.
- Heart health: Omega-3s support cardiovascular function by improving circulation, reducing triglycerides, and promoting a healthy heart rhythm. Cats with heart disease may benefit from omega-3s as part of their treatment plan.
- Brain and eye health: DHA is a key building block of the brain and retina. For kittens, it supports proper brain and eye development; for adult and senior cats, it helps maintain cognitive function and mental sharpness.
- Kidney support: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common in older cats, and studies suggest omega-3s can help slow its progression. By reducing inflammation and improving blood flow to the kidneys, omega-3s may help preserve kidney function longer.
- Immune and inflammatory balance: Because omega-3s reduce systemic inflammation, they can benefit cats with autoimmune or inflammatory conditions. They also support overall immune system health for all cats.
Omega-3’s in cat food
Omega-3’s are a required ingredient in commercial cat food, but amounts can vary widely between brands. To determine whether you cat’s food has sufficient omega-3s, check the ingredient list carefully. Here’s what to look for:
- Named fish ingredients: Look for foods that list salmon, sardines, mackerel, herring, or anchovy as one of the first ingredients. Generic “fish” or “fish meal” will be lower quality and will probably contain little if any omega-3’s.
- Added fish oil or marine oil: High-quality cat foods often include salmon oil, herring oil, or menhaden fish oil as natural sources of EPA and DHA.
- Cold-water or wild-caught fish sources: These tend to have higher omega-3 content than farmed fish.
- Proper packaging: Omega-3’s are sensitive to air and light, so foods should be stored in airtight, opaque packaging to prevent oxidation.
Even if your cat’s diet includes fish-based ingredients, many commercial foods don’t provide sufficient omega-3’s for therapeutic benefits, so a separate supplement may still be necessary.
Choosing the right omega-3 supplement
Not all fish oils are created equal. Here’s what to look for:
- High-quality, purified fish oil: Choose a product that has been tested to be free of heavy metals and contaminants.
- Cat-specific formulas: While not necessary, supplements made for cats come in measured doses and flavors that appeal to feline palates.
- Avoid cod liver oil: Even though cod liver oil is inexpensive, it can contain excessive levels of vitamins A and D.
How to give Omega-3s to your cat
Most cats readily accept liquid fish oil when it’s mixed with food. Some cats (like Allegra) will even lick it “straight up” as a treat. Start with small amounts and build up to the recommended dose. Consistency is key: omega-3’s work best when given daily.
Omega-3 fatty acids are a simple, safe way to enhance your cat’s overall health and quality of life. As with all supplements, always check with your veterinarian for proper use and dosage, especially if your cat is on any medications.

About Darwin’s Natural Pet Food
Darwin’s is doing everything right, both in terms of what’s in the food and what’s not:
Darwin’s statement on H5N1
Darwin’s is very selective in choosing which suppliers we work with. We have been in contact with our poultry suppliers who all have testing protocols in place for a range of viruses, including H5N1, and will not ship products from flocks in which even one bird tested positive. In addition, as part of Darwin’s normal production process, all our meals are treated with an organic Peracetic Acid solution, which is effective against multiple pathogens, including H5N1.
If you are concerned about feeding raw, cooking poultry to a temperature of 165° Fahrenheit will destroy H5N1. Sous viding is the gentlest option that retains the most nutrients. Since sous viding is not always accessible for all pet parents, we also recommend very gently sauteing Darwin’s. This should be low and slow, and all liquid rendered from the cooking process should be served with the food. The food should be completely cooled before serving.
