I love the week between Christmas and the New Year. There’s something magical about this soft space between the years. The decorations are still up, but the rush toward Christmas is over. Time somehow loses its urgency, and almost feels suspended. It’s like the year is taking a final slow exhale.
For me, this is a contemplative week. There’s nothing to prepare for, nothing to celebrate. We can simply be. And in that stillness, reflection comes naturally. This week invites us to pause. To think without having to come to any decisions. To feel without needing to fix anything.
We can look back over the year that’s ending and reflect on what was good, and what we would have liked to have gone differently. 2025 was a pretty awful year on a global level, and for many, it was a difficult year on a personal level. My wish for you is that despite everything, your good still outweighs the bad.
We can look ahead to the new year. Our challenges won’t magically vanish at the stroke of midnight, but we can approach the new year with hope.
But looking back or looking forward is not really the point of this week. These precious days between the years are about delighting in the present moment.
Those of us who share life with a cat already have the purrfect guide for this transitional space.
Cats understand the art of the pause. They don’t rush to fill quiet moments. They don’t feel compelled to be productive just because the calendar or the clock says they should. A cat will sit by the window and watch the snow fall with complete absorption. No agenda. No commentary. Just presence.
Cats gently remind us that this kind of awareness isn’t wasted time. It’s essential time.
This is the purrfect week to sit more. Linger over a cup of your favorite hot beverage. Read without checking the clock. Gaze out the window and let your mind drift. Cats slip seamlessly into these moments, curling up beside us, purring softly, and anchoring us in the present moment. Their purr is comforting and grounding. It draws us out of our spinning thoughts and back into our bodies.
Cats also model something many of us struggle with: acceptance.
They don’t judge the year we had. They don’t care whether we met our goals or fell short. They don’t ask us to reinvent ourselves by January 1. To your cat, you are already enough.
This week may bring up mixed emotions. The peace and gratitude of the holiday season is tempered with trepidation about re-entering the faster pace of post holiday life. Hope for the coming year is overshadowed by worry. Cats simply sit with all of it. They don’t try to cheer us up or pull us out of our feelings. They simply hold the space. Their quiet companionship is a precious gift.
Cats also help us reclaim rest as something deeply necessary. To me, there’s nothing more peaceful than watching Allegra nap. Cats don’t feel like they have to earn their rest – they honor their need for it. And maybe that’s one of the most important lessons this week has to offer: before we rush into a new year with new plans and expectations, we are allowed to rest.
This in-between week doesn’t demand transformation. It invites contemplation, softness, and presence.
Lean into that feline wisdom. Sit with your cat. Let her quiet presence guide you back to yourself.

Thank you, Ingrid and Allegra. This post is particularly inspiring .
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year !
Marie and SapphoLily
PS The Yeowww! Catnip banana (accept no substitutions!) introduced a partially peeled banana (Amazon has it) that Santa Cat put in SapphoLily’s stocking. BIG HIT! YEOWWW!
Allegra might want to review it.
We’ll have to check it out! Happy New Year to you and SapphoLily!
I love to watch my cat sleep also. Sometimes I just sit next to him and smile when he does that little thing where they snuggle their heads into their beds while they’re lying on their sides. It is the cutest! I agree, unfortunately it has been a very tough year and am hopeful for a much better 2026. I think I am going to listen to an audiobook tonight to relax and take some of your-and Allegra’s-advice! If you’re looking for a recommendation, I’m currently listening to a historical fiction book about the first female detective at The Pinkerton Detective Agency…it’s interesting!
Wishing you and Allegra peace, health, and happiness in the New Year!
I know exactly what you mean with that head snuggle! It’s so precious! Wishing you a much better 2026 filled with peace and purrs!
To me, this is the week not to make any decisions or plans…just relax! Hope you and Allegra have a happy and healthy new year! Xoxoxox
Same to you, Jackie!
I am always glad when Christmas is over and can relax and destress from all the busyness of the season. This year has been such a challenge. I am hoping next year will be better.
I hope you have the best year next year, Janine!
Thank you! I hope your new year will be the best too.
