We most often associate separation anxiety with dogs. But can cats suffer from separation anxiety too? The answer is yes, and it’s especially true for cats who have a very strong bond with their humans. Separation anxiety can also occur in cats who have never spent time alone for long periods.

In a recent article for Animal Wellness Magazine, I explored the signs of separation anxiety. If you can recognize it and know how to respond, you can help your cat feel more secure. This is especially important if you’re away from home for extended periods.

Separation anxiety can go both ways

Separation anxiety disorder (SAD) is a well-documented psychological condition in which an individual experiences excessive anxiety regarding separation from home or from those to whom the individual has a strong emotional attachment. And while we usually think of separation anxiety in terms of pets being stressed about being separated from their humans, I think it exists in reverse, too.

I most definitely experience it. I like to travel, but traveling has always meant leaving my cats, and no matter how wonderful my cat sitters have been over the years, I’m still never quite comfortable with being away from them. For the past couple of years, I haven’t traveled anywhere. Even though thankfully Allegra is stable right now despite her various health issues, I worry that upsetting her routine and leaving her even if it’s just for  an overnight trip would upset the delicate balance we’ve achieved.
