Today’s quote was inspired by a recent Dhamma talk by Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara, the leader of the Walk for Peace. He reminded us that every rock can become a gem. I would like to share a transcript of that portion of the talk with you.
Every day, we carry an invisible backpack filled with heavy rocks—stress, anger, anxiety, fear, disappointment, attachment, and endless worries. The heavier the backpack becomes, the harder it is to experience genuine happiness and inner peace.
But Venerable Pannakara reminded us that every rock can become a gem.
When people throw rocks at us through harsh words, criticism, or difficult situations, we don’t have to carry those rocks with us.
Instead, we can transform them into precious gems.
Every insult becomes an opportunity to practice patience.
Every conflict becomes an opportunity to cultivate compassion.
Every painful experience becomes an opportunity to develop forgiveness.
Without difficult people, how could we learn kindness? Without challenges, how could we cultivate patience? Without those who hurt us, how could we truly practice forgiveness?
Those who throw rocks at us may unknowingly become our greatest teachers, giving us the precious opportunity to cultivate wholesome qualities and collect spiritual treasures.
The key is mindfulness.
The moment anger begins to arise, notice it. Feel the tightness in your chest. Feel your heartbeat becoming faster. Before the fire grows stronger, pause…
Take a deep breath.
Relax.
Let go.
In that very moment, a rock is transformed into a gem.
Venerable Pannakara compared this practice to collecting precious gems in a glass jar. Every act of mindfulness, loving-kindness, compassion, patience, forgiveness, gratitude, and wisdom becomes another gem added to our collection.
Little by little…
Gem by gem…
We build our own island of peace.
Life will continue to throw rocks at us. Whether we carry them as burdens or transform them into gems is entirely our choice.
May we all continue cultivating mindfulness, compassion, patience, forgiveness, and loving-kindness—one gem at a time.
