Thanksgiving ABC’s 2018

Thursday is Thanksgiving in the United States. And while spending time with family and friends is the best part of this holiday, I think it’s also important to reflect on the true meaning of the holiday: a time to count one’s blessings. I keep a gratitude journal all year long: each night before I go to bed, I list at least three things I was grateful for that day. Gratitude is a powerful force. It shifts your mood and your thoughts from a place of lack to a place of abundance. Gratitude is all about being in the present moment, and appreciating what’s around you.Continue Reading

A Very Special Painting

cat-painting-custom-portrait-bernadette-kazmarski

I’ve admired Bernadette Kazmarski’s art for many years. I first introduced you to this supremely talented artist eight years ago, and Bernadette and I have been friends ever since. She designed the covers for two of my books (Purrs of Wisdom and Adventures in Veterinary Medicine) and has been designing my annual Christmas cards for many years. Several years ago, I commissioned a painting of a friend’s cat. Last year, I commissioned a landscape painting of the beautiful view from a friend’s weekend retreat.Continue Reading

It’s always sad when a friend’s cat dies. My heart hurts for what I know they’re about to go through as they mourn their loss. We’ve all been there, and even though everyone grieves in their own unique way, we all know how hard it is. And when the cat is one of those “soul cats,” the feline version of a soul mate, the pain of loss can be overwhelming. Earlier this week, my dear friend Kate Benjamin, the founder of Hauspanther, lost her soul cat Ando.Continue Reading

Whether your kids are human or furry, enjoy your special day!

Father’s Day can be bittersweet for those of us whose fathers are no longer with us. My dad passed away 14 years ago, but I still get a little sad when friends talk about what they’re going to do to celebrate, or when I see Father’s Day cards pop up in stores.Continue Reading

To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die. ― Thomas Campbell

Today is Memorial Day in the United States, a day when we honor the memory of the men and women who have died in military service. We also celebrate the arrival of summer, but because of the reason for the holiday, it has always felt a bit odd to me to say “Happy Memorial Day,” so instead, I’m wishing you a day filled with love and beautiful memories.Continue Reading
