Is your cat at least one year of age or older? Does he or she also have a clean bill of health from your veterinarian? Your cat could be a perfect candidate for Basepaws citizen science healthy cats research program!

You share an unbreakable bond with your cat and would do anything to support their health and well being. That’s why Basepaws works with a dedicated community of pet parents like you on groundbreaking feline health research. These studies support the development of new health screening tests that rely on a simple swab of the mouth for the earlier recognition and treatment of disease in cats. We want to help all cats live healthier and happier lives, even longer.

Healthy Cats Research Cohort

We’re always recruiting for our healthy cats research cohort, as DNA samples from healthy cats are used for comparison across all of our feline health studies, including:

  • Atopic dermatitis
  • Food allergies
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Dental disease
  • Diabetes
  • Gastrointestinal lymphoma and inflammatory bowel disease
  • Longevity

Simply put, having the DNA of healthy cats allows us to continue making scientific advancements in feline health. If you would like to include your kitty in Basepaws’ healthy cats cohort, our eligibility criteria is as follows:

Inclusion Criteria

Cats must be at least one year of age or older to be eligible for the healthy cats cohort.

Cats must also have a clean bill of health from a veterinarian within the last 6 months that confirms they have no chronic or acute diseases.

Exclusion Criteria

Cats with any acute illness that has occurred within the last 6 months, or that is still present, are not eligible to participate.

Cats currently on any antibiotic, antiviral, or antifungal medications, or any probiotic supplements, are not eligible to participate.

Participation is Free!

Parents of qualifying cats will receive a free Basepaws cat DNA test for collecting their cats’ oral swab samples—along with a free Basepaws report of results that helps you know your kitty better—inside and out! You’ll learn about their unique breed profile, genetic traits responsible for their fabulous appearance, and whether they are genetically predisposed to common feline diseases. Shipping of the DNA test is free both ways; however, Basepaws can only accommodate this free shipping for cat parents based in the U.S. at this time.

Please obtain a digital copy of your cat’s medical records that confirm a clean bill of health by your veterinarian before applying to the healthy cats program. If you are interested in other Basepaws research programs, medical records from your vet must confirm your cat’s diagnosis as it relates to the specific program to which you’re applying.
