Scratching posts are one of the most important pieces of cat furniture, and every cat household should have at least one in every room. In addition to providing a natural outlet for your cat’s need to scratch, they can also prevent a variety of behavioral problems.

Different cats have different preferences when it comes to scratchers, so until you know what your cat loves, make sure you offer a variety. Some cats are horizontal scratchers, others prefer vertical or angled scratchers.

Regardless of which kind your cats are partial to, quality is important. Yes, cheaper scratchers will get the job done: giving your cat an opportunity to scratch. But they won’t last as long, and they won’t be sturdy enough to withstand vigorous scratching without moving around or tipping over. Cheap scratchers also tend to “shed” a lot, and you end up with cardboard flakes everywhere.

The Endless Buffet Scratch Pad

The Endless Buffet Scratch Pad was created by Square Paws. They’re actually known for their fantastic custom cat trees, and the scratch pad is an adaptation of their Cat Food Cando. Measuring 15-1/2″ in diameter and 4″ high, this cat scratcher is made sustainably in the USA. The corrugated cardboard is wider and thicker than other scratch pads. The thicker cardboard will last longer than thinner scratchers.

The scratcher is reversible. The food can label wrapper is easily removable to allow you to turn the cardboard insert upside down when worn. Simply reattach the wrapper once you’ve flipped the insert.

The faux brand “ChickenPuss” is a nickname Square Paw’s founder Mario had for his first cat, Slinky. Slinky crossed the rainbow bridge in 2018, and the label is Mario’s way of remembering the bond he felt with his first feline companion.

Putting the Endless Buffet Scratch Pad to the test

Allegra took to this scratcher immediately. The video was taken literally seconds after I put it on the floor. The scratcher is nice and sturdy, and won’t slide even on hard floors. She’s gone to it at least once a day, often multiple times a day, and after about two weeks, there aren’t a lot of cardboard flakes visible.

And of course, it has a super high cute factor!

A lot of times, when you have a product as cute as this one, the functionality leaves a lot to be desired. Not in this case! This is one of the sturdiest scratchers I’ve seen. Allegra loves it, and it makes me smile every time I walk by it – win win!

The Endless Buffet Scratch Pad is available from Square Paws.

  1. I love Mario and Square Paws! That scratcher is super, super cute but Roary tends to prefer larger ones……it seems a little small for him (even if he is a small cat), he tends to like to stretch out. Regardless, that is super adorable as is everthing that Square Paws creates!

  2. I haven’t tried a cardboard scratcher here because I always heard they shed too much. I didn’t realize the quality helps with this issue. I have figured out my girls. Lulu and Pele like vertical scratchers that are rope. Kiki likes carpet and will scratch either vertical or horizontal. I might want to try this cardboard scratcher and see how they like it.
