Happy Independence Day
from
Allegra, Ruby and Ingrid

Please keep your cats safe during the festivities. A cat’s sense of hearing is much more acute than ours, and all the noises associated with the holiday are much more intense for them. Add to that the lack of understanding of what is going on, and you can have a very scared cat on your hands. Here are some tips for helping your cat cope with fireworks, thunderstorms, and other loud noises:

  • Create a safe space for your cat. If you’re having a party, unless your cat is very social and doesn’t mind a lot of commotion, keep her confined to a quiet bedroom. Put her favorite blanket, bed or toys in with her, along with a litter box and fresh water. Shut the curtains and drapes and turn on lights to lessen the flash of the fireworks.
  • Leave on a TV or music to drown out the noise from the fireworks. (This works during thunderstorm season as well.)
  • Make sure that your cats are wearing their identification tags and that the information is current.
  • Consider a natural calming aid like Stress Stopper, Rescue Remedy, or Composure calming treats.

How will you and your cats be celebrating the holiday?

  1. Happy 4th of July to you, Ingrid, Allegra and Ruby! Today is also Jayda’s 4th birthday! So we will be celebrating with extra treats and catnip!

  2. We live next to the city baseball park and have fireworks on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th! I’ll be closing the blinds and running the tv to try and hide some of the noise; I’ve found that window fans also work well at masking noise for the cats. If that doesn’t work, I’ll just shut myself in the bedroom where Marble and Minty go to hide, and while they’re under the bed, I’ll lie near them on the floor, reading a good book. To me, this sounds like an excellent, relaxing holiday tradition!

  3. Happy and safe Fourth!

This is our first independence day with Dante & Puck so we’ll be spending it here with them to see how they react. Thank you for the tips; we’ll be sure to be ready when our neighbor starts his fireworks in his back yard. We’re also close to our town park so we’ll be getting it from all sides….yikes!

  4. A very Happy fourth of July to all of you. Thanks for the reminders. We are very lucky here and don’t have fireworks. Hope you have a great day.
