Today is Memorial Day in the United States, a day when we honor the memory of the men and women who have died in military service.
For many people, it’s also a day to remember all departed loved ones, and for most of us, that includes our beloved felines. I’m remembering Amber, Buckley and Feebee today. All three of them changed my life in ways I never could have imagined. I miss them every day, and I treasure the legacy they’ve left behind.
I believe that one of the greatest sacrifices our military personnel make when they deploy is having to leave their beloved pets behind. Thankfully, there are organizations like PACT for Animals, who assist members of the military in finding temporary foster care for their pets during deployments. The video below shows the joyful reunion between two cats and their soldier mom.
As you remember your lost loved ones today, please take a moment to recognize the sacrifices of our military personnel and thank them for their service.

Thanks for the name of that organization to help military family pets. I had noticed many dying in NYC ACC’s kill pound where they kill many pets grieving for lost humans at too high a rate.

I hope people will jot down memories of loved ones — humans and pets — as they think of them on holidays & other times. Every little thing they might want to remember more vividly as time goes by. We shared some stories of our cat Lucky (my husband the lovely little stories, me the photos) in DEAR LUCKY: LETTERS TO OUR CAT but they don’t have to be published to be shared with family and friends. A cousin & I are trying to track down one of our ancestor’s dog’s names. Now if he had just left a few notes including more on his life before moving to the U.S….
You are so right that it’s important to jot down memories while they’re fresh, Brenda, and holidays are a good time to do that.
