Sunday Purrs: Never Say “I Don’t Have Time” Again

“I don’t have time.” It’s probably the most overused excuse we hear every day, and most of us are guilty of using it liberally.

Yes, we’re all busy. The standard answer to “how are you?” no longer seems to be “I’m fine,” but rather “I’m so busy!” Many people seem to consider being busy a badge of honor. Our culture reinforces that busy is somehow good. Being busy, supposedly, is one of the marks of someone who is successful.  And as a result of being so busy, we all feel that we don’t have time. Sunday Purrs: Are You Too Set in Your Ways?

set-in-your-ways

One of the reasons I love cats so much is that they’re creatures of routine. I love my daily rituals, from that first cup of coffee while I sit on my loveseat and contemplate the world outside my window to tucking myself into bed with my girls at night. But I’ve come to realize that there’s a fine line between enjoying routine, and being set in your ways.

By definition, a routine  is something that we do regularly, without thinking much about it. Once established, routines become a consistent part of our lives. To say we live in challenging times is putting it mildly. Every day there’s more awful news, there’s so much suffering, conflict and anger everywhere around us, it’s enough to unsettle even the calmest and most grounded among us. The fact that we’re constantly exposed to all of it on social media and on the news makes it worse. It’s hard not to get stuck in a thought pattern of fear, worry and gloom and doom, and even harder to remember that there’s still so much good happening in the world every day. It’s easy to get stuck in a constant loop of negative thoughts. But even though it may feel like you have no control over any of it, there’s something you can do to pull yourself out of these negative thought patterns, and all it takes is a little self-awareness and mental discipline.Continue Reading

Sunday Quotes: Clouds

Today, my heart is heavy with worry for everyone in the path of Hurricane Irma. I have a lot of friends in Florida, and South Florida in particular has always had a special place in my heart. Some of my friends have evacuated, others are staying put. I know I won’t breathe easy until I’ve heard from all of them that they’re safe.Continue Reading
