Today is Tortoiseshell Cat Appreciation Day!

I created this day in memory of Ruby. April 17, 2011 was the day I brought her home. Ruby was the consummate tortie. She had tortitude in spades. She was strong-willed, lively, and very possessive of me. She wore her big tortie heart on the proverbial sleeve: she was the most affectionate cat I ever had.

Help me celebrate Ruby’s memory today

Let’s turn Facebook, Instagram, and any other social networks you’re a part of brown, tan, gold, black, cinnamon and all colors in between today to celebrate our torties in all their beauty and uniqueness!

If you’d like, you can use our Tortoiseshell Cat Appreciation Day logo to create your own photos. Right click on the image below and save it to your computer, then use the blank frame with your favorite photo editor to create an image with your own tortie. Allegra is ready for the celebration. She also thinks we need to have some tuna cake today in Ruby’s memory.

  1. Thank you, all of you, for celebrating Tortoiseshell Cat Appreciation Day with us! The tortie love is spreading a little bit wider every year. I’m sure Ruby is smiling in kitty heaven, and she probably had tuna cake to celebrate!

  2. My girl Fendi has many of the tortie traits and she also is the most affectionate and smart kitty I have ever had!

  3. Beautiful Ruby! She looks so much like my Sophie. Poor Sophie had to get her nails clipped yesterday and she was furious with us. It takes both of us to hold her, soothe her and get it done. She usually forgives us quickly though.

Happy Tortoiseshell Appreciation Day to all the precious Torties out there.

  4. Oh glory! Would it be absolutely horrid of me if I don’t tell Misteach aka The Goddess Of Tortitude that today is Tortoiseshell Cat Appreciation Day…at least for the moment?

She is among the ones who well remember when the ancient Egyptians worshiped cats as deities and she’s already more than a wee bit convinced that she is the embodiment of Bast anyway so knowing that there is a formal Tortoiseshell Cat Appreciation Day!?!

Might as well practice kowtowing while chanting wearenothworthywearenotworthy 😉

    • That was very cute! I got a tortoseshell and it screamed all the time and rain into my bedtoom and would not come out. I finally got how stressed out she was and gave her some Energy Healing sessions as I had just finished the class with Dr Sue Morter. I got a read on past owner and lifted charge from her past and then did some more on her stomach . She surprised me by coming out of the room when we had company and came right up to the company and let the lady pet her! Then she stopped screaming when she would awake and when I came in the room. She is so happy and grew thick nails instead of thin little nails! She is a love and a good friend who cuttles up to me. I had not known about Tortoishells before.

        • Thank you very much, Ingrid. I am happy to help animals and also I have found doing this healing feels like I am in a lovely magical place. I am finding more happiness in life now and so is my lovely cat!

  5. I cared for many cats once upon a time. Ruby brings back memories of one we had that was a tortie. I’ll spend April 17th now trying to remember that kittie’s name; my memory has dimmed and this will be a good challenge.
